Stone Materials

Terrazzo

A composite floor of marble, granite, or quartz chips set in cement or resin — a long-lasting commercial flooring classic that dulls without periodic polishing.

What Is Terrazzo?

Understanding Terrazzo

Terrazzo is not a single mineral but a composite material made of chips of marble, granite, quartz, or glass embedded in a cement or epoxy resin binder, then ground and polished smooth. This composite construction gives it a distinctive speckled or flecked look and exceptional durability, which is why it has long been favored for high-traffic commercial floors.

Because the binding matrix and the embedded stone chips can wear at different rates, terrazzo needs periodic grinding and polishing to keep the surface level, glossy, and free of dulling or fine scratches from years of foot traffic.

Where Terrazzo Is Typically Installed

  • Commercial lobbies and corridors
  • School and hospital hallways
  • Retail store floors
  • Historic residential foyers
  • Building entryways with heavy foot traffic

Typical Finishes

Polished

A high-gloss finish that highlights the embedded stone chips — the classic terrazzo look.

Honed

A lower-sheen, matte finish that is more slip-resistant for high-traffic commercial spaces.

Common Wear & Mistakes

  • Dulling and fine scratching from years of foot traffic in commercial settings
  • Cracking along control joints or where the substrate has shifted
  • Staining from spills that penetrate an aged or worn sealer
  • Uneven sheen between repaired or patched sections and the original floor

Sealing & Maintenance

  • Schedule periodic diamond grinding and polishing in high-traffic commercial spaces to maintain shine and slip resistance
  • Reseal terrazzo regularly, especially in busy retail or lobby settings
  • Use walk-off mats at entrances to reduce grit that scratches the polished surface
  • Address cracks promptly to prevent them from spreading under continued foot traffic

Terrazzo FAQs

Yes — in most cases terrazzo can be re-ground and repolished to restore its original shine and level surface, which is far more cost-effective than replacement.
