Understanding Slate
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that forms in thin, stackable layers, giving it a naturally textured "cleft" surface in its most common finish. It typically comes in deep grays, blacks, greens, and rust tones, and its layered structure makes it naturally slip-resistant.
While slate is denser and harder than marble or limestone, its layered structure can lead to flaking or delamination over time, especially without proper sealing, and its color can look chalky or faded when the sealer wears away.

Typical Finishes
Natural Cleft
The stone’s natural textured surface, left unpolished for grip and rustic character.
Honed
A smoother, more uniform surface with the texture reduced for easier cleaning.
Polished
A glossy, richly colored finish, generally used only on very dense slate.
Common Wear & Mistakes
- •Fading or chalky appearance when the sealer has worn away
- •Flaking or small pieces lifting from the layered surface (delamination)
- •Soap scum and mineral buildup in shower installations
- •Grout staining between slate tiles
Sealing & Maintenance
- ✓Reseal slate periodically to preserve its rich, dark coloring and prevent flaking
- ✓In showers, squeegee after each use to reduce mineral and soap buildup
- ✓Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner rather than acidic bathroom sprays
- ✓Address any lifting or flaking early before it spreads across a tile
