Stone Materials

Marble

A classic, elegant stone prized for its veining and soft luster — and one of the most sensitive natural stones to acidic spills and abrasive cleaning.

What Is Marble?

Understanding Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from recrystallized limestone, which gives it the soft, often swirling veining patterns it is known for. It is composed primarily of calcium carbonate, which makes it relatively soft on the hardness scale and chemically reactive to acids found in everyday products like citrus juice, wine, and many all-purpose cleaners.

That same softness is what allows marble to take a high polish and a smooth, glass-like finish, which is why it has been a favored material for flooring, countertops, and decorative surfaces for centuries.

Where Marble Is Typically Installed

  • Kitchen and bathroom countertops
  • Foyer and hallway flooring
  • Fireplace surrounds and hearths
  • Bathroom vanities and shower walls
  • Commercial lobbies and reception desks

Typical Finishes

Polished

A high-gloss, reflective finish that shows off veining and color depth, but shows etching and scratches more readily.

Honed

A smooth, matte to satin finish that is more forgiving of light surface wear and slip-resistant.

Tumbled

A textured, weathered look often used for rustic flooring or wall applications.

Common Wear & Mistakes

  • Etch marks (dull, often ring-shaped spots) from acidic spills like lemon juice, vinegar, or wine
  • Scratches and dulling in high-traffic areas or under kitchen cutting activity
  • Yellowing or dulling from waxes and coatings applied over time
  • Chips at countertop edges and corners

Sealing & Maintenance

  • Use only pH-neutral, stone-safe cleaners — never vinegar, bleach, or generic all-purpose sprays
  • Wipe up acidic spills immediately rather than letting them sit
  • Reseal polished or honed marble periodically to help resist staining, based on usage
  • Avoid abrasive scouring pads, which will scratch the polished surface

Common Questions

Marble FAQs

Those dull spots are almost always etch marks — chemical burns from acidic substances like lemon juice, wine, or vinegar-based cleaners reacting with the calcium carbonate in the marble. Cleaning removes dirt but cannot fix etching; that requires honing and repolishing.
