Understanding Granite
Granite is an igneous rock formed from cooled magma, made up of quartz, feldspar, and mica crystals that give it its characteristic speckled or flecked appearance. It is one of the hardest natural stones commonly used in homes, which makes it highly resistant to scratching and heat.
Despite its hardness, granite is still a porous stone. Without a sealer, liquids like oil, wine, and coffee can penetrate the surface over months and cause staining, even though the surface itself resists physical wear extremely well.

- ✓Bathroom vanity tops
- ✓Outdoor kitchen surfaces
- ✓Flooring in high-traffic commercial spaces
- ✓Building facades and monument surfaces
Typical Finishes
Polished
The most common finish — a mirror-like shine that intensifies color and pattern.
Honed
A soft matte finish that hides fingerprints and minor scratching better than polished granite.
Flamed
A rough, slip-resistant texture typically used for outdoor paving and steps.
Common Wear & Mistakes
- •Oil, wine, or coffee stains that soak in when the sealer has worn off
- •Dulling of the polish in heavy-use areas over many years
- •Chips at sink cutouts and countertop edges
- •Hard water spotting near sinks
Sealing & Maintenance
- ✓Reseal granite countertops roughly every 1–2 years, or sooner in heavy-use kitchens
- ✓Test your sealer periodically: water should bead on the surface rather than soak in
- ✓Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner rather than acidic or abrasive products
- ✓Wipe up oil and wine spills promptly to prevent staining
