Stone Materials

Dolomite

A marble-like stone that is somewhat harder and more stain-resistant than true marble, but still calcium-based and sensitive to acids.

What Is Dolomite?

Understanding Dolomite

Dolomite is a sedimentary/metamorphic rock closely related to limestone and marble, but with a higher magnesium carbonate content that makes it somewhat harder and slightly more resistant to etching than true marble. Many stones sold as "marble" in kitchen and bath showrooms are technically dolomite, prized for offering a similar look with a bit more everyday durability.

Despite being tougher than calcite marble, dolomite is still a calcium-based stone and will etch when exposed to strong acids, so it needs many of the same care practices as marble.

Common Wear & Mistakes

  • Etch marks from acidic spills, though generally less severe than on true marble
  • Scratches from knives, cookware, or grit
  • Staining if the sealer has worn away and oils or wine are left to sit
  • Chips at edges and corners

Sealing & Maintenance

  • Seal dolomite countertops periodically, similar to marble, though it may hold up slightly longer between resealing
  • Use pH-neutral cleaners and avoid acidic or abrasive products
  • Wipe up spills promptly even though dolomite is more resistant than marble
  • Use cutting boards and trivets to protect the surface from scratches and heat
